Plug-N-Scan 600 III EP Plus or
Twainscan 600 III EP Plus

The only differences between the 600 III EP and the 600 III EPPlus are that the first one is a 24-bit scanner and the Plus model is a30-bit scanner. Additionally they have slightly different installationand troubleshooting procedures. All of the tutorials in the Plug-N-Scan600 III EP Installation and User’s Guide except for installationprocedures apply to the Plus model as well. We have added additional troubleshootinginformation for the 30-bit Plus model below which does not apply to the24-bit model.

Troubleshooting PC Installations

If you are having trouble with the installation, you should performthe following steps:

1. Make sure the scanner is powered on. Check to see that the poweradapter is still plugged into the back of the scanner and test the poweroutlet that the scanner is plugged into.

2. Make sure one end of the scanner cable is plugged into the port ofthe scanner marked Host and the other end is connected to the printer porton back of your PC.

3. If the installation program crashes or gives you error messages afterinstalling the second floppy disk, you either did not have the ApplicationLibrary CD in your CD-ROM Drive or you chose the incorrect drive letterfor your CD-ROM drive. Check these items and attempt to re-install. Readthe section below about Re-installing Drivers.

Known Problems

    1. Driver version 1.6 includes a program called watchdog.exe which controlsthe scanner lamp. Watchdog.exe occasionally causes General Protection Faultsin Windows 3.1x. This problem does not occur in Driverversion 2.2.

    2. Due to recent changes in Windows 95, TextBridge Classic will notinstall properly on some computers. If you get error messages during theTextBridge installation, contact Customer Service so one of our reps candetermine if you need a patch file for TextBridge Classic. Call (714) 247-1300and be sure to choose Customer Service from the voice mail menu and tellthem you need the TextBridge Patch for your Application Library CD.

    3. TextBridge Classic’s Instant Access OCR feature doesn’t work withMicrosoft Word 97. Click here to see the solution.

Re-installing or Updating Drivers

Windows 95 Users
The Plug-n-Scan 600 III EP Plus driver 1.6 includes a program calledwatchdog.exe that controls the scanner lamp. Watchdog.exe is installedin the Startup Program Group in Windows 95. If you attempt to re-installthe Twain driver or to install a driver update without removing watchdog.exefrom the Startup Group, you will get the following error message:

C:WINDOWSTWAINA4S2SPICALL.DLL is in use and cannot be installed.Please exit all applications and retry. Press ignore to not install thefile and abort to cancel the installation.

Here is how to remove watchdog.exe from the Startup Group in Windows95.

1. Right click the “Start” button and choose open from menu that popsup.

2. Double click the Programs Folder icon.

3. Double click the Startup Folder icon.

4. Highlight Watchdog and press the DEL key on your keyboard to deletewatchdog.exe.

5. Reboot your computer.

6. You should now be able to install the version 2.2 driver update asexplained below.

Windows 3.x Users
If you have Windows 3.1x, simply reboot your computer and you shouldbe able to re-install your software or install a driver update.

If rebooting does not disable watchdog.exe, use the File Manager orMS-DOS commands to delete the following file:

C:WINDOWSTWAINA4S2WATCHDOG.EXE

You should now be able to install the version 2.2 driver update as explainedbelow.

Driver 2.2 Installation inWindows 95 and Windows 3.1x

To install driver version 2.2, insert the disk in your floppy drive.Windows 95 users click “Start” then “Run” and type in A:run then click“OK.” Windows 3.1x users click “File” choose “Run” and type in A:run thenclick “OK.” Follow the onscreen prompts to complete.
