In the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, icons are used to represent disk drives, control panels and directory folders. Icons can be clicked with a mouse in a GUI to activate its functions or open it. |
| IEEE 1284 Cable | IEEE is an Acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Cable designed for optimum performance using the IEEE 1284 rating for data transfer rates through a parallel port. The IEEE 1284 standard is 50 to 100 times faster than a traditional parallel port. | Ink-jet | Type of printer, which heats or vibrates ink and then sprays a fine-controlled mist through holes in the print head. The print head never actually touches the paper. Ink-jet printers are very popular in the home providing laser printer-style print quality at much lower prices. |

| Interface Card | Common term used to describe a circuit board designed to plug into a computer’s expansion slot to allow connection of another peripheral. For example, the SCSI card that is installed to allow a scanner to interface with the computer. |
| Interpolation | Method of increasing the resolution of an image by adding dots to the image. The new dots are added around existing dots and averaged in color and tone to match their neighbors. This method is generally used to scan images at resolutions beyond the optical maximum of the scanner. |
| Invert | Command in the scanner interface or imaging program that creates a negative version of the image. |

| ISIS | Acronym for Image and Scanner Interface Specification. A black and white scanner driver used for scanning text, usually into OCR programs. Mustek scanners use ISIS drivers for OCR programs on Macintosh computers. |
