OCR

Abbreviated term for Optical Character Recognition. 1. Type of software designed to recognize scanned text characters and convert them into a format editable in a word processing program, such as TextBridge Classic. OCR programs use pattern matching, feature extraction and spell checking to recognize text characters in a variety of fonts and sizes. See feature extraction, pattern matching, spell checking and TextBridge Classic. 2. One of the features of the Scan Dialog Box, used for recognizing documents. See Scan Dialog Box.

On-line

1. Being on a network or the Internet. 2. The state of a document or picture viewed on a computer.

Operating System

A set of commands that controls the memory management, data storage and operation of a computer. MS-DOS, Windows, UNIX, Linux and Mac OS are all operating systems. See Macintosh OS, Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS.

Optical Resolution

The range of resolution, measured in DPI, that can be recognized by the CCD or CIS or a scanner. See hardware resolution and interpolation.

The first version or generation of an item, such as a document.

Outlook Express

E-mail program by Microsoft Corporation.

Output

Data received from a computer in the form of a display on the monitor, print out, sound, etc.

Output Device

Any peripheral that allows a user to receive data from a computer, such as a monitor, printer, speakers or modem.
